Term Definition
Software

Synonym for software or IT program can also be used to define a specific application created by a developer.

Software package

Ready-to-use collection of programs equipped with standard features.

Spare Unit

Spare unit used for emergency replacement.

SSH

Secure Shell Secure Communication Protocol (such as SSL) and IT Program.

SSL

Secure Sockets Layer - (or Transport Layer Security (TLS)). Encryption protocol used to secure a connection between a customer and an Internet server, which allows sensitive information such as business transactions to be sent. A connection using an SSL protocol is easily recognizable thanks to its URL extension (ex: HTTPS or FTPS)

SSL VPN

VPN using an SSL Protocol for Data Encryption.

SSL Web Portal

Web site or intranet. Using the SSL security protocol, it requires authentication and is the "gateway" providing access to many resources such as email or the data network.

Switch

Its allows the redirection of an input signal to one or more outputs determined.

Tool enabling users to access a program or system

VDSL

Very high bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line / Very High Speed. Just like ADSL, VDSL technology uses a traditional telephone line to transmit information. The speeds are asymmetric or symetric. With VDSL, the distance between the residence of the customer and the telephone exchange is shortened by the use of an optic fibre network and copper cables. Thus, very high rates for data transmission can be used and 30 Mbit/s can be reached for download and 5 Mbit/s for upload.

Virtualization

Technology enabling different operating systems to operate on a single computer. It is used in the framework of Virtual Private Servers (VPS).

VOIP

Voice Over Internet Protocol - Voice over IP / IP Telephony / Digital Telephony. Verbal communication transmission via the Internet.

VPN

Virtual Private Network. Extension of local networks preserving local network security. It relies on the identification of interlocutors and data confidentiality. (ex: From your personal laptop).

VPS

Virtual Private Server - Virtual Machine (VM) Several independent machines, using their respective operating system, running through a single physical server.

Web Alias

Substitute address (email or URL).

WIFI

Wireless-Fidelity - Broadband Wireless Internet Access. This term actually covers three different wireless network standards (B, G and N). The Wi-Fi Alliance certifies all Wi-Fi products and checks their compatibility.

Wiki site

Collaborative Web Site that can be modified by any visitor.

WLAN

Wireless LAN or Wireless Network.

WYSIWYG

What you see is what you get - User Interface used to directly visualize the anticipated result (ex: Page Composition, word processing, Photo retouching Software).
